The 2023 starter guide to creating a mid-century modern decor on a budget.

A starter guide to creating a mid-century modern decor on a budget.

Here is our succinct guide to creating a mid-century modern decor on a budget.

  1. Use texture to create interest - Incorporate tactile surfaces and materials into your decor to add interest and dimension. Textured wallpapers, rugs, and throws can all be used to create a sense of depth and interest in a room.

The preferred fabrics of the time were:

  • Tweed and Plain Weave Fabric.
  • Bouclé
  • Felted Wool
  • Smooth Velvet

They were either plain or had geometric patterns imprinted on them.  These are easier to find these days.  Nauradika often lists cushions or rugs with mid-century patterns.

If you cannot change your furniture, you can always add nice pillows with mid-century patterns, or you can hang nice mid-century themed posters.  You can browse our collection of posters by following this link.  https://www.nauradika.com/collections/unframed-posters

  1. Use light to create visual interest - Strategic lighting can be used to create different moods in a room and highlight key features. Consider using floor lamps, wall lamps, table lamps, and string lights to create a warm and inviting space.  The choice of lighting fixture in mid-century modern style seems to be endless. Just on Nauradika, you will find a fun selection. It makes adding color and desirable shapes so easy. Check out our collection at: https://www.nauradika.com/collections/modern-lighting
  1. Use objects to add pops of colour - Incorporate colorful objects into your decor to add visual interest and contrast. Bright vases, candle holders, and statues can all be used to add pops of color to a room. We specialize in these items.  You will find a large collection of vases but also candle holders and statues on www.nauradika.com. You can pick the right collection for you on the top left.
  1. Use plants to soften hard lines - Soften the hard lines of a room with plants. Potted plants can be used to add life and interest to any space. Patch seems to have the best, hipster/mid-century modern collection of plants and planters.  Although we are not affiliated with them we do like recommending their site. www.patchplants.com.
